Birthday Poem
I bring you flowers of light, a birthday bloom
to candle-light this day
of Heaven and Earth – spent in a Hampstead room
and out on Hampstead’s way.
A shouting-out surprise
of daffodils, anemones wide-eyed,
blue irises – inside
a room already lit by your brown eyes –
Then down the roads, the casual Hampstead hills.
The air said Yes
and linked our wills –
you talked on with a shoot’s expressiveness –
You bring me flowers of life, a birthday bloom
to candle-light this day
of Earth and Heaven – of love in a light room
and out on Hampstead’s way.
