Dhansiri 1998-99
In its Writers Workshop edition Dhansiri contains a number of translations from the poetry of the Bengali poet Jibanananda Das, who frequently refers to a totemic and almost magical river in his verse, the Dhansiri. That edition came out in 1999, the centenary of the poet’s birth. Though this site (with a very few exceptions) features my original poetry only, so that Das is not here in the text, the tribute to his life and poetry stays in the title. (All my translations from Das and Rabindranath Tagore are with Carcanet Press UK.)
