Eagle

from a Magritte painting

Over the soft lips of the sea
under the dark brow of the sky
I am an eagle flying free
and full in the world’s face I fly

Light blue and evening blue, dark blue
and blue of the night as I pass by
is the vast world that I fly through
and darkest is the topmost sky

They call me poet and say they see
upon my wings a lighter sky
with clouds of white and light on me
a clearer heaven where I fly by

With head foot wing and wingtip too
I simply tell them what I see
through me they see a world made new
yet I sail past old sky, old sea

I am an eagle flying free
and full in the world’s face I fly
over the soft lips of the sea
under the dark brow of the sky
