John Gwynn
headmaster
Some leaders are loud, and given to not hearing;
their way with staff is a mere ego-trip
of distancing, or else obsequious nearing:
and that is all their art of leadership.
I speak of schools. But some are given to headship
as if to undertake a sure intent:
for staff and children, then, it is no hardship
to teach and learn. A school’s true government
is in their gift. You taught me by example.
Little I knew you. But you were a friend
and more than colleague. Now a light and simple
thought stays with me. Let it not offend
the circle of your family, if I add,
you were the elder brother I never had.
