A howl, a scream
unheard, unvoiced
unutterably savage
singes the mind’s edge
outside the sky
hears nothing except
the normal click-clack
of everyday life
sees nothing unusual
inside an inferno
runs riot in flame
huddles up with the wind
I am half mad, helpless
a fifteen-year-old child
is shot and stabbed
by other children
I shall always see
his mother’s sad face
and his twin sister’s
just another death
carried out in broad daylight
I am shocked, but only
a small part of me
lets the shock be felt
deep, safe inside
outside the sky
hears nothing except
the normal click-clack
of everyday life
sees nothing unusual
