Room at the Top
an impression of the film
Money at high speed: so I took it easy,
racing the crazy corners all the same,
like on a trip out when the day was breezy,
or riding it hard and fast through a poker game –
for I played the cards I saw, and the job fell neatly
into my purse – and I stamped my foot hard down,
and drove to suicide that dear one who sweetly
let me forget this high-speed merchant town…
for I took the town’s top daughter to her wedding,
went flash for the top – but I was drifting blind,
and I long for my lady and my lady’s bedding,
because she was so gentle and so kind.
I think – and memory tears my life apart –
of the great wrong I did my lady’s heart.
